Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is the updated version of the Dreamcast game, Sonic Adventure 2. The game features the same stages, storyline, with slightly enhanced graphics for the Nintendo Gamecube with a 2 Player Mode.

Each character feature their own way of getting through the stages. Sonic and Shadow each have Speed type Action Stages, where you must make it to the Goal Ring to pass the stage. Tails and Eggman's stage feature Action type shooting stages, where you use your Machine to blast away enemies with Homing Missiles. Knuckles and Rouge's stages are different, and dont require you to reach the Goal Ring. You must collect the 3 shards of the Master Emeralds in the stage to complete it. Though, in some cases, you may find yourself collecting something other the emerald shards (i.e. Keys and Chaos Emeralds). Sonic and Shadow's stages are best for players who are into racing through stages using speed, as you normally would do in a Sonic the Hedgehog game. Knuckles and Rouge's stages are best suited for people who have more patience, and for people who are good at searching in good places.

Through Sonic/Shadow's stages you find that you're mostly using Homing Attacks to destroy enemies and racing through loops. Something you would do in Sonic games, to show off the speed in the game. The only problems are twitchy jumps, and that sometimes jumping off rails while grinding, to reach another can sometimes be annoying when you fall off and die. Also, twitchy jumps could've been fixed, where you either take a leap forward instead of jumping, or instantly do the Homing attack. Tails/Eggman's stages, you'll find that when there's multiple enemies surrounding you, you'll find yourself spinning around rapidly trying to get each one. Though, it does pay off. Problems are the twitchy jumps where if you have the Air Boosters, you'll find that instead of jumping, you actually boost into the air. If you're an impatient person (like me), then you might find you'll be fostrated when you can't find the item you're looking for. The problems in the levels again, are the rare twitchy jumps.

The new theme for the Nintendo GameCube version is "Battle". 7 Battles in total.

Random Battle: Selects a match randomly
Action Race Battle: High-speed action race battle
Treasure Hunt Race: Find the treasure
Shooting Battle: Lock-on shooting battle
Chao Karate: Karate Match among Chao
Chao Race: Racing Match among Chao
Kart Racing

In the Action Race, Treasure Hunt, and Shooting Battle each character can perform a special attack of his/her own, depending on the number of collected rings. The type of a special attack changes every 20 rings as 20, 40, 60 you collect. After obtaining more than 80 rings, the type of a special attack returns back to the one of the 20 rings (the number of the rings to use each type of a special attack depends on each character). The special attack can be used even after the character loses one life. The 2 Player Mode is great for playing with family and friends.

Also in this game, there exists a tiny and cute mysterious creature called "Chao." Chao live in an environment called "Chao Garden," and create a very unique ecosystem, learning and breeding according to the player's actions. In the Stage Select Mode, you can enter and exit the Chao World as you like. Note that in the Story Mode, once you enter one place and exit, you will have to proceed to the next Action Stage. To go and meet Chao, you must find and collect a Chao key before clearing the Action Stage. After clearing the stage, you will be able to go to Chao World. From the Chao World, you can go to visit Chao Garden and Chao Kindergarten. Once you are in the Chao Garden, the character will release Chaos Drives and small animals you have collected in the Action Stage. These are essential to transforming you Chao. Note that time in the Chao Garden passes only while you are present in the Garden itself. Chao hatches from eggs, and grows through infancy into maturity. While growing up, Chao appreances, personalities, and actions change according to the way they are treated by the player (i.e ""petting" vs. "throwing") or food and items ("Chaos Drives," "small animals," etc.) given by the player. The are many things you can do in Chao World, as well as drop your chao into school, name your chao and buy items for your chao. As well as looking after your chao in the Chao World, you can also transfer them into your Gameboy Advance using the Sonic Advance game, and a Gamecube and Gameboy Advance link. Then you can send your chao into Tiny Chao Garden on the game boy advance. You seem to raise your chao quicker there, so if you want your chao to grow big and strong fast, it's best to send them there if you can.

So, there's quite a lot to do in the game, and more. The game is fun and enjoyable, and is a great game to have in your Sonic the Hedgehog game collection.
